Separate where your company is incorporated, where the team works, and where customers are.
A geography fit decision that distinguishes rules, preferences, and unknowns.
Outcome
Investor geography fit is not one country matching another country. A company can be incorporated in one jurisdiction, have founders in another, and sell into several markets. A useful review compares the investor's actual rule with the matching dimension of the startup.
This workflow produces a geography map and a bounded classification: compatible on supplied facts, an explicit mismatch, or a clarification needed. It does not recommend relocation or incorporation changes. Those decisions need qualified advice beyond a matching exercise.

Write the startup's location facts
Separate the present from the plan:
- Incorporation: current legal jurisdiction, if established.
- Headquarters or operating base: how the company actually describes it.
- Founding team: where the founders currently work.
- Wider team: distributed locations relevant to the supplied requirement.
- Customer market: where customers are now and where expansion is planned.
- Future changes: proposed moves, each clearly marked uncommitted unless otherwise evidenced.
Do not label a company US-based because it wants US customers. Do not label it European solely because one contractor lives in Europe. The search brief should preserve these distinctions rather than compressing them into a flattering location tag.
Compare the stated markets in the European pre-seed list, UK pre-seed list and US pre-seed list, keeping each fund’s actual geography rule attached to the row.
Read the rule literally
Seedcamp's published geography answer discusses both where a company is based and a broader European connection. K9's criteria specifically discuss founding-team location. These illustrate different dimensions; neither should be silently rewritten as an incorporation-only rule. Seedcamp FAQ and K9 criteria, checked September 24, 2026.
Words indicating preference are not identical to explicit exclusions. Keep the original meaning when classifying. A firm having an office in London also does not, by itself, prove a UK-only or Europe-wide mandate.
Compare stated VC investment geographies and use the eligibility brief to distinguish office location from company requirements.
Compare Seedtable alternatives for investor discovery while keeping office location separate from investment geography.
A fictional boundary case
Fictional startup CanalAI is incorporated in Delaware, operates from Lisbon, and plans US sales. A fictional fund explicitly requires the founding team to be US-based. Delaware incorporation does not satisfy that requirement. The supplied facts indicate a mismatch.
Another fictional investor says it prefers European-founded businesses building global products. CanalAI may look relevant, but “European-founded” needs interpretation if founder history was not supplied. Mark clarification needed. Do not substitute the Lisbon office for the missing fact.
The failure case is an assistant “helpfully” describing both investors as compatible by picking whichever location sounds best. The vector prevents that contradiction.
Put the answer back into the shortlist
Geography is one part of thesis fit, not the entire decision. Preserve the classification with its source date in the evidence scorecard. If the candidate remains relevant, use diligence before the call to prepare a concise clarification rather than a long justification.
This skill works in an assistant with pasted-text support. Human review should check ambiguous location language and any consequences of changing the business structure. The prompt classifies research evidence; it does not establish legal eligibility or guarantee investor interest.
