A UK founder assembling a first institutional round needs to know which investor could lead, which could participate and which needs more evidence before a conversation makes sense. This guide compares published investment roles and turns them into questions for your round. It is not a list of guaranteed first cheques.
Compare published mandates in the UK pre-seed investor list and UK seed investor list before assigning round roles.

See which investors fit your startup
Add your website. We pick three investors who back companies at your stage, sector and market, with the evidence for each.
Do you need a lead investor or another name on the list?
Start with what is missing from the round. If nobody has agreed terms or committed to lead, a collection of potential small participants may leave the main problem unresolved. If a lead already exists, the relevant question becomes remaining allocation, timing and fit with the syndicate. Keep the target round amount separate from each investor's possible contribution.
Playfair
Playfair's published thesis describes a lead or co-lead approach at pre-seed in the UK and Europe.
- Why consider it: Investigate it as a possible round-building partner when a first institutional lead is the unresolved task.
- Check before outreach: Ask whether your funding history and sector meet its entry criteria before spending time on an introduction.

Episode 1
The FAQ distinguishes a preference to lead with up to £2M from follower cheques of up to £1M when a lead is already present.
- Why consider it: The role distinction helps a UK software founder explain whether they need a lead or are completing an existing round.
- Check before outreach: State the actual remaining allocation and whether a lead has committed. Do not present an informal expression of interest as a committed lead.

Seedcamp
Seedcamp describes itself as a first backer, investing from pre-product and pre-revenue through post-launch.
- Why consider it: A starting candidate when a UK company can explain both its early stage and the business that the first round will enable.
- Check before outreach: First backer does not by itself establish a lead commitment for your deal. Clarify the role, terms and process directly.

Prepare a first-round conversation
- State the target amount, use of funds, milestones and the latest date the round needs to close. Show how the amount was derived.
- List previous funding and current commitments separately. Distinguish signed commitments from conversations, indications and targets.
- Decide whether you are seeking a lead, co-lead or participant. Describe the role in the first message.
- Prepare evidence for the milestones the capital should unlock: customer demand, product progress and the main risks.
- Keep a dated decision log. When an investor declines on stage, geography or sector, update the criteria rather than repeatedly recycling the name.
Fictional example: a founder targets a £900K round and has £100K of informal angel interest. That does not mean £100K is committed or that a lead exists. A more accurate message asks for a lead conversation, states the target, and describes the angel interest as uncommitted. The distinction changes both the investor list and the outreach.
Check how VC mandates extend beyond home markets before treating a UK office as a UK-only investment rule.
Keep your evidence inspectable
Record the source, the date you read it, the specific claim it supports and the question still open. Keep a fund’s first cheque separate from its total investment per company.
