AI Skill: Decide Which Investors to Approach First

Sequence an investor shortlist by eligibility, evidence, access path, and what each first conversation can teach you.

What it does

Choose which qualified investors to approach now and which need more checking.

What you get

Priority and learning waves, with reasons and next actions for each investor.

Order first conversations for fit and learning, not fame. The task below separates approach-now, verify-first, and out-of-scope names, then sequences eligible candidates by credible access and useful questions. It never estimates funding odds.

OpenVC's outreach playbook puts qualification and access paths before email execution and describes working in waves. That is useful as process advice, not evidence that a particular wave will convert. Before applying it, check the relevant person and vehicle: the SEC's early-stage investor guide shows why an angel and a venture fund are not interchangeable entries in a list.

Apply the lead-investor qualification checklist before prioritizing candidates expected to set terms or anchor the round.

Prepare a decision-ready list

For each candidate, provide the person, organization, investor type, claimed stage/geography/check range, the dated source for each claim, thematic reason, possible conflict, access path, and current relationship state. A blank field should be UNKNOWN. Add the actual round objective and the questions you most need early meetings to test. Do not upload private introductions or contact details to a tool you are not allowed to use for them.

Evidence for every match

Know why a fund fits before you write

Each match shows the fund's stated mandate, cheque size and dated recent deals, with links to the sources.

Once you have set the order, use seed outreach funnel math to size the next batch against your meeting capacity.

Fictional worked example

Fictional company: HarborWeave is a seed-stage workflow product for maritime brokers. Candidate A is an angel the founder knows, with two recent logistics investments but an unknown check range. Candidate B is a current seed partner whose firm explicitly backs shipping software in the company's region, but the founder has no access path yet. Candidate C is a famous growth fund with a published Series C mandate. Candidate D has relevant port-software investments and an unresolved portfolio conflict. The result should not be A, B, C, D by fame. A may belong in VERIFY until the check range is known, then a learning conversation if there is genuine mutual relevance. B is a priority candidate once an honest route is identified. C is out for this round. D needs a conflict check before contact.

Failure case: false precision masquerades as strategy

An AI response assigns each investor a 37%, 22%, or 8% chance of investing and sorts the list. Those numbers have no observable base rate for this company and hide the actual constraints. Discard them. Ask instead which fact would change the decision: a stage policy, a country rule, a first-check range, or a partner's current responsibility. YC's fundraising conversation is a reminder to be direct about the company story; a clever queue cannot rescue an unclear one.

Use the partner map to identify the actual decision-maker, outreach sequencing to run follow-ups, and how to read a match to keep fit and evidence confidence separate. If your brief is still incomplete, Find investors for your startup before scheduling the first wave.
