Check-size reality: compare an investor's role with your round

Test whether a proposed allocation overlaps credible initial-check evidence, without confusing total round size, fund size, or ownership arithmetic with a promised check.

What it does

Check whether an investor’s plausible first check fits their role in your round.

What you get

An allocation comparison, evidence gaps, and a question to resolve them.

Quick answer

Compare the amount you want from one investor with its initial-check range in the same currency. Write the round total, committed capital, desired allocation and role first. Then use the prompt below to classify the overlap and identify the next question, so every shortlisted fund has a clear reason to stay or go.

Outcome

Investor check size matters in relation to the role you need filled. A fictional $1 million round could seek a $600,000 anchor and several smaller participants. Those are different allocation tests. Set the financing purpose first with the round milestone plan.

Inputs

Provide the total round, currency, actual commitments, desired allocation and required role. Do not call verbal interest committed capital. Supply saved sources with IDs and dates; preserve wording about initial checks and follow-ons.

Seedcamp's saved FAQ source describes a first cheque of $350K–$1.25M and separately discusses a Select fund for existing companies as they scale. Keep those purposes apart when comparing allocations. The catalog leaves the dollar currency unspecified, so confirm it before comparing a USD request.

Compare the published pre-seed and seed check ranges with the allocation you need before testing an individual fund.

Use these USD endpoint medians to choose a search lane. Pre-seed and seed both have a $500K median minimum; seed has a higher median maximum. Each endpoint uses the funds that publish it.

StageFundsMinimum n / maximum nMedian minimumMedian maximum
Pre-seed5249 / 49$500K$2M
Seed5450 / 52$500K$3M

Browse investor lists by stage, then compare each candidate with your intended allocation.

The cheque column in the US seed investor list gives you published ranges to compare with the allocation you need.

Before fixing an allocation, compare seed VC ownership targets and round math to see what the check would imply.

The healthtech seed allocation example connects a planned anchor check with a specific buyer and financing milestone.

Copy this allocation worksheet

These fictional rows show how one check changes the rest of the round. Replace them with your plan before running the prompt.

RoundAnchor allocationRemaining allocationParticipant plan
$750K$250K$500K4 × $125K
$1.5M$500K$1M4 × $250K
$3M$1M$2M4 × $500K

Record actual commitments separately from proposed allocations. If the anchor amount changes, recalculate the participant plan and check whether the new total still funds the intended milestone.

Evidence for every match

Know why a fund fits before you write

Each match shows the fund's stated mandate, cheque size and dated recent deals, with links to the sources.

When the allocation requires someone to own terms and diligence, use the lead-investor role and qualification checklist to separate that job from check size.

Evidence hierarchy

Start with a dated initial-investment statement for the relevant vehicle. Put round totals, fund size and ownership goals in separate fields. When sources disagree, keep both with their dates and scope; resolve which applies to your proposed investment before comparing the amounts.

Expected output

Keep amount, currency, scope and date beside the decision. For an outside-range result, name the boundary crossed. For a not-comparable result, identify the missing scope, currency or vehicle evidence. Preserve unknown role evidence even when the arithmetic fits.

Worked example: a $1.5M pre-seed round

Fictional allocation plan: $500K anchor plus $1M from participants. A participant may contribute $100K–$250K. The table compares those allocations with saved public statements. Use the last two columns to prepare the next question.

Fund / sourceStated amount$500K anchor$100K–$250K participant
Differential initial checks$250K–$3MInside rangePartial overlap at $250K
Laconia check range$250K–$1MNumeric overlap; initial scope needs confirmationPartial numeric overlap
Flybridge seed checks$1M–$3MOutside range; stage also differsOutside range

For Differential, ask about the anchor role. For Laconia, confirm the initial allocation. For Flybridge, resolve the stage and amount gap before spending time on diligence.

Example

Fictional investor Cedar publishes an initial range of $200,000–$500,000. Fictional startup FluxPort wants a $300,000 participant. Their supplied ranges are compatible. Lead ability remains unknown unless separately supported.

Sources and open questions stay visible alongside the fit.

A press release says Cedar joined a $4 million round. It does not change Cedar's known initial range or prove a $4 million check. If FluxPort instead needs a $750,000 anchor, the answer changes to outside the supplied range, with an explicit exception question, not automatic rejection of the entire firm.

Compatibility

Use the prompt with an assistant that accepts pasted source text. Review the arithmetic, currencies and units yourself. Keep uncertain activity in the fund-cycle review, then prioritize eligible candidates with which investors go first.

FAQ

What is check size?

Check size is the amount one investor contributes to a round. Compare it with the allocation you seek from that investor, not just the total raise.

What is a normal check size at pre-seed?

The qualifying USD sample has a $500K median minimum and a $2M median maximum. Use the range for your planned role: a participant allocation and an anchor allocation need different candidates.

Does a fund's range include follow-ons?

Read the scope. A lifetime investment amount or a later-round reserve cannot substitute for a first-check range. Ask when the source leaves that distinction unclear.

Is check size the same as round size?

No. Several investors can make up one round. A fund can fit a participant allocation even if its maximum is much smaller than your total target.

What if my round exceeds a fund's maximum?

Test the intended allocation. If that allocation also exceeds the maximum, ask about an exception or another role. Discuss the role alongside the revised amount.

If the worksheet calls for a small first allocation, use the sourced first-check fund examples to test amount and commitment sequence together.

Method and limits

As of 14 October 2026: 705 combined funds, comprising 655 ready wave-2 funds and 50 legacy-only reviewed funds joined by registered domain; four non-ready matches excluded. Catalog facts win, legacy fills cheque gaps. USD endpoint medians exclude averages, programs and incompatible scopes; missing bounds are omitted separately. No FX or market-wide inference. Cheque sources checked 11–13 October; Seedcamp Select context checked 10 September. Sources not re-fetched. Our investor research methodology.
